Ministry of Culture and National Institute of Korean Language Announce Korean Alternative Terms... 'Social Media' to be 'Nurisotongmaeche'
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language recommended on the 11th to replace the term ‘Millennial Generation’ with the Korean term ‘Saecheonnyeon Sedae’ (New Millennium Generation). They also suggested ‘Nurisotongmaeche’ and ‘Eouldanji (Joseong)’ as Korean alternatives for ‘Social Media’ and ‘Social Mix,’ respectively.
‘Millennial Generation’ refers to those born between the early 1980s and the early 2000s. ‘Social Media’ means open online content or platforms for expressing and sharing thoughts or opinions. ‘Social Mix’ refers to the practice of building public rental housing and general sale housing together within the same complex.

The two organizations decided on these alternatives during the Saemal Meeting held from the 4th to the 6th. The Saemal Meeting is a committee that provides Korean substitute words that are easy for the general public to understand before difficult foreign neologisms spread. Experts from various fields such as Korean language, foreign languages, education, publicity and publishing, information and communication, and journalism participate. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language plan to continuously promote the use of these alternatives, led by government ministries and media outlets.
