[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Kim Tae-nyeon, the floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, stated on the 10th regarding the expansion of the nationwide employment insurance system, "We will sufficiently consult with the opposition party in May and ensure that as many of our citizens as agreed upon can be included within the scope of employment insurance."
Meeting with reporters at the communication center in the afternoon, Floor Leader Kim said, "It is the responsibility and duty of the state to ensure that all citizens face no difficulties or suffering within the employment safety net. Currently, out of 28 million economically active people, 15 million are not enrolled in employment insurance. We need to gradually expand it so that everyone can maintain stability within the framework of employment insurance. However, it is difficult to do everything at once due to various practical conditions."
Floor Leader Kim added, "The basic direction is to take even one step further so that more citizens can benefit. The bill in the National Assembly includes expanding employment insurance to special employment workers, cultural artists, and platform workers. I hope the opposition party will think more progressively and open the door wider," he said.
When asked if there is a plan to hold an additional extraordinary session of the National Assembly after the 15th, Floor Leader Kim replied, "Yes."
Regarding the third supplementary budget bill in response to COVID-19, Floor Leader Kim said, "Our party also needs to discuss the content and scale and consult with the government. What is clear is that urgent and prioritized measures must be established related to job stability, and financial input is inevitable."
About President Moon Jae-in's special speech on the third anniversary of his inauguration, Floor Leader Kim said, "I felt the urgent desire in the speech to reduce the suffering of the people caused by COVID-19 even a little, and despite that, there was confidence."
