Yeosu City Tourism Association Selected for Regional Tourism Promotion Organization Government Public Project
Up to 500 Million KRW Support Over 2 Years... Expected Role as Yeosu Tourism Control Tower
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Yeosu City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Kwon Oh-bong) announced on the 4th that the Yeosu City Tourism Council has been finally selected for the regional tourism promotion organization contest project hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Korea Tourism Organization) and will receive 250 million KRW in support this year.
Twelve regions nationwide, including Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon Province, and Goyang-si, Gyeonggi Province, were selected, and in Jeollanam-do, two cities/counties, Yeosu City and Gangjin-gun, were chosen. The regional tourism promotion organization serves as an intermediate organization between local residents and the government, playing a role in resolving local tourism issues by utilizing various cooperative networks.
Accordingly, the Yeosu City Tourism Council represents the voices of local residents and performs the role of coordinating and leading tourism interests related to tourism facility operators, accommodation, food service, and other tourism-related businesses.
They also promote governance cooperation strengthening projects such as private-led tourism briefings, campaigns, the Visiting Yeosu Tourism Courtesy Academy, tourism seminars, operation of tourism practitioners’ networks, and citizen co-prosperity tourism policies. Additionally, they will be responsible for a project generating revenue from romantic Yeosu downtown coastal trekking through operating five paid courses mainly focused on coastal downtown areas and night view attractions.
Kim Chang-joo, chairman of the Yeosu City Tourism Council, said, “Although we have achieved 13 million tourists for five consecutive years, as the development of the old downtown accelerates and rents rise, original residents are being pushed out, and there are many damages to residents caused by overtourism. In the era of local decentralization, we will demonstrate tourism capabilities centered on the region and create a sustainable, high-quality Yeosu tourism that coexists with citizens.”
