'Model of Autonomous Police System' Jeju Island... Min Gap-ryong "Jeju, Rapid COVID Response with Autonomous Police"
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Dong-hoon] Min Gap-ryong, Commissioner of the National Police Agency, expressed hope that related legislation, including the revision of the Police Act, will be enacted within this year, stating that the autonomous police system is showing results in Jeju, where it is being piloted.
On the 4th, Commissioner Min held a press conference at the headquarters in Migeun-dong, Seoul, saying, "The Jeju autonomous police system, which is a pilot operation of the autonomous police system, is progressing effectively on the ground, as confirmed by on-site inspections," and added, "We will strive to have the legislation passed even in the final stages of the 20th National Assembly and make it a priority legislative matter as soon as the 21st National Assembly convenes."
Commissioner Min particularly emphasized the effectiveness of the autonomous police system in relation to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19). He stated, "In the case of Jeju autonomous police, the local government took the lead in on-site response during the COVID-19 situation," and evaluated, "By exercising police authority in administrative measures related to infectious diseases, Jeju Province has been able to implement comprehensive responses and process matters swiftly."
He continued, "The national police in Jeju are focusing their capabilities where needed for on-site response," and noted that comprehensive responses by local governments to quarantine measures have become easier.
