Kim Hyo-seok, Chairman of the Korea Petroleum Association, Passes Away... Funeral Ceremony Held as Family-Only Service
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] The funeral service for Kim Hyo-seok, chairman of the Korea Petroleum Association and a three-term National Assembly member, was held at 10:30 a.m. on the 4th at Seoul St. Mary's Hospital.
The funeral was held simply with only family members attending, in accordance with the deceased's wishes. The approximately 30-minute farewell ceremony proceeded with a moment of silence, flower offerings, and incense burning, without a separate eulogy. Initially, the family planned a private funeral, but as condolences from political and business figures continued, the funeral was opened to the public.
Chairman Kim was from Jangseong, Jeollanam-do, and studied business administration at Seoul National University and the University of Georgia in the United States (master's and doctorate). He served as a professor at Chung-Ang University, dean of the Graduate School of Information Industry, and president of the Korea Information Society Development Institute.
He joined the Millennium Democratic Party in 2000 and was elected as a member of the 16th to 18th National Assembly representing Damyang, Gokseong, and Jangseong in Jeollanam-do. He held positions such as chairman of the policy committee of the Millennium Democratic Party, floor leader of the Democratic Party, and president of the Democratic Policy Research Institute. During the 2017 presidential election, he served as co-chairman of Moon Jae-in's campaign committee. Later, in November 2017, he was appointed the 22nd chairman of the Korea Petroleum Association. While serving as chairman, he actively voiced support for the domestic petroleum industry and made efforts for the development of the petroleum sector, including holding issue briefings with the Japan Petroleum Federation.

An industry official said, "Although he was a former politician, after taking office as chairman of the Korea Petroleum Association, he seriously studied the industry and showed a strong scholarly demeanor," paying tribute to him. The burial site is at Yongin Rodem Park in Seoul Memorial Park. He was 72 years old.
