'44-year-old' Woods' Late Regret "I Ran Too Much"
In a Golf TV fan conversation, "Running 30 miles a week in my youth actually harmed my knees"
[Asia Economy Kim Hyun-jun, Golf Specialist Reporter] "Excessive running is a no-go."
'The Returned Golf Emperor' Tiger Woods (USA, photo) made news on the 2nd (Korean time) during a conversation with golf TV fans when asked, "What is the one thing you would most want to tell your younger self?" He replied, "I would tell myself not to run too much." He expressed regret, saying, "Around the age of 25, I was the only player doing weight training in the gym," and "Running 30 miles (about 48 km) a week ultimately ruined my knees."
Woods was so dedicated to running that he actually started his daily routine by running 4 miles (about 6.4 km) every morning. After completing his daily schedule including practice, he would run an additional 4 miles. It is important to note that in December 1994, during his freshman year at Stanford University, he suffered from chronic knee injuries, having two tumors and dead cell tissue removed from his left knee. The condition worsened, leading to a second surgery seven years later in 2002.
This is why Woods immediately began a major swing correction to protect his knees. In June 2008, he pushed himself to compete in the US Open, facing another critical moment. Despite doctors warning him to use crutches for three weeks due to knee damage, he fought through an exhausting 91 holes, including 18 holes of a fourth round playoff and one playoff hole. While he secured his 14th major win, he paid a harsh price with surgery and eight months of rehabilitation immediately after the tournament.
In December 2008, he developed an issue with his right Achilles tendon, and subsequently injuries spread throughout his body, including his neck and back. After a spectacular comeback in 2013 with five PGA Tour wins, he was again sidelined by back surgery. Woods' victory at the 2018 Tour Championship is even more remarkable considering this. Last year, he finally secured his 15th major win at the Masters in April and reached Sam Snead's PGA Tour record of 82 wins by winning the Zozo Championship in October.
