With a total project cost of 20 billion KRW, this project, scheduled to be carried out by 2023, will rebuild the Haenam Water Purification Plant, the source supplying local waterworks to Haenam residents, into a modern facility.
Established in 1980 and having passed over 40 years, the Haenam Water Purification Plant urgently needed facility improvements due to aging structures causing concerns not only about structural stability but also water quality safety.
Accordingly, Haenam-gun, led by Governor Myeong Hyun-gwan and responsible officials, visited central government departments several times to explain the necessity of the project and strongly requested priority allocation for the region, achieving selection in this large-scale public contest project.
The county had also steadily prepared in advance to secure national funds by investing 870 million KRW of county funds for basic and detailed design of the old water purification plant maintenance project.
In particular, since it can be simultaneously promoted with the 33.1 billion KRW old water pipeline maintenance project confirmed and underway since 2019, it is expected to be a turning point for the revolutionary development of local waterworks modernization in the Haenam area.
The Haenam-gun old water pipeline maintenance project will replace 105 km of old water pipelines in Haenam-eup, Songji-myeon, Hwangsan-myeon, and Munnae-myeon over five years until 2024, and establish block systems, etc.
The water pipeline network, mostly installed over 20 years ago including Haenam-eup in 1983, has aged, causing increased leakage and issues such as rust water during summer, resulting in various difficulties in residents' daily lives.
Upon completion of the Haenam Water Purification Plant modernization project, it will be possible to supply safe drinking water to 11,310 people (5,915 households) in areas including part of Haenam-eup, Samsan-myeon, Hwasan-myeon, and Hyonsan-myeon with a daily water supply of 4,000 cubic meters.
Furthermore, through the old water pipeline maintenance project, the current leakage rate of 42% is expected to be reduced to 15%, playing a significant role in resolving rust water issues and supplying clear water.
