Japanese National Diet to Return 20% of Lawmakers' Salaries to Share COVID-19 Burden
[Asia Economy Reporter Minyoung Kim] Japanese members of parliament have decided to voluntarily return 20% of their salaries temporarily to share the burden caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
On the 27th, the House of Representatives and the House of Councillors of Japan held plenary sessions in succession and passed a bill to amend the Salary, Travel Expenses, and Allowances Act, which reduces members' monthly salaries by 20% for one year starting next month and returns the amount to the national treasury as a COVID-19 response measure.
Starting next month, the monthly salary of Japanese lawmakers will decrease from 1,294,000 yen (approximately 14.8 million KRW) to 1,035,200 yen (approximately 11.85 million KRW), a reduction of 258,800 yen (approximately 2.96 million KRW).

According to Kyodo News, based on the current number of seats in the House of Representatives (465 seats) and the House of Councillors (245 seats), the total amount of salary returned by Japanese lawmakers over one year is estimated to reach about 2.2 billion yen (25 billion KRW).
