Cultural Heritage Administration Announces Public Contest for Promotion Support of World Heritage and Documentary Heritage
[Asia Economy Reporter Jonggil Lee] The Cultural Heritage Administration announced on the 27th that it will hold a public contest for next year’s promotional support projects for UNESCO World Heritage and Memory of the World until the 15th of next month. This support project has been carried out since 2004 to widely promote World Heritage sites with Outstanding Universal Value and to increase community participation. Since last year, Memory of the World has also been included as a support target to raise awareness of its preservation and importance. The final projects will be decided and notified through expert review, among other processes.

This year, the Cultural Heritage Administration will support 35 projects related to seven World Heritage sites in eight metropolitan cities and provinces. It will also back 27 projects related to seven Memory of the World sites in six metropolitan cities and provinces. Representative World Heritage promotional projects include ▲ Incheon Metropolitan City and Ganghwa County’s ‘Ganghwa Dolmen Bus Tour’ ▲ Gyeonggi Province’s ‘Namhansanseong Virtual Reality’ experience ▲ Chungcheongnam-do, Gongju City, and Buyeo County’s ‘Academic Forum on Baekje Historic Areas.’ Memory of the World promotional projects include ▲ Gyeongsangnam-do and Sancheong County’s Donguibogam International Conference ▲ Hapcheon County’s website production for the Goryeo Tripitaka and related woodblocks ▲ Gyeongsangbuk-do and Andong City’s touring exhibition of Korean Confucian woodblocks ▲ Gwangju Metropolitan City’s overseas exhibition of the May 18 Democratic Movement records. South Korea holds 14 World Heritage sites and 16 Memory of the World sites, respectively.
