Installation of Fine Dust Traffic Lights at Dobong-gu Public and Private Childcare Centers
Domino (Dobong Fine Dust No), Selected as a 2020 Seoul City Fine Dust Reduction District Special Project... Collaborative Domino Fine Dust Improvement Project for Vulnerable Health Groups
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Dobong-gu (Mayor Lee Dong-jin) has been selected as the final winner of the 2020 Seoul Metropolitan Government’s fine dust reduction district-specialized project with its fine dust reduction initiative ‘Domino (Dobong Fine Dust No)’, receiving 70 million KRW in city funding.
The district will implement an ‘Indoor Wall Greening’ project as part of Seoul’s fine dust reduction specialized projects. Starting from June this year, plants known for their fine dust reduction and air purification abilities will be installed on the walls of 10 national and public daycare centers.
Additionally, the district plans to monitor the proper operation of the ‘Indoor Wall Greening’ once a month and measure fine dust levels to assess the reduction effects, providing consulting on indoor air quality management methods.
Alongside this, Dobong-gu will install ‘Fine Dust Traffic Lights’ in multi-use facilities. Previously, in 2018, the district was the first nationwide to install 44 fine dust traffic lights in daycare centers. In 2019, 83 more were installed, and this year, an additional 5 were installed in co-parenting sharing centers, totaling 132 units to date. Building on this, from June this year, specialized outdoor fine dust traffic lights will be installed in eight multi-use facilities frequently used by residents, including Dobong-gu Community Center, Dooly Museum, and Dobong Environmental Education Center.
Moreover, the district is promoting unique fine dust reduction policies linked with the existing ‘Cooperative Domino’ project.
‘Cooperative Domino’ is a fine dust improvement project aimed at vulnerable health groups. This year, it was selected as a new cooperative agenda in the citizen participation budget, securing 107 million KRW in city funding.
The district is conducting tailored environmental education for vulnerable groups such as infants, elementary to high school students, pregnant women, and the elderly by using virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) simulation education and fine dust kit-making experiences.
In particular, fine dust experience screen kiosks will be installed at Dobong-gu Office and Dobongsan Station, establishing a fine dust communication platform where residents can recognize real-time weather and fine dust information and experience the harmful effects of fine dust.
Last year, Dobong-gu was selected as a ‘Good Air City’ at the 10th Air Day ceremony, the first in Seoul.
In addition, the district has continuously carried out related projects to reduce fine dust, including ▲ the installation of fine dust display facilities for the first time among nationwide basic local governments in 2017 (The Secret of Dobong-gu Office Lighting) ▲ the nationwide first and largest distribution of 127 fine dust traffic lights in daycare centers over 2018-2019 ▲ and signing an agreement with Konkuk University in 2019 to provide fine dust education and information services.

Mayor Lee Dong-jin of Dobong-gu said, “The district has established a public-private cooperative system to solve fine dust issues together, and these efforts are spreading like a domino effect throughout the community. We will continue to do our best to create a ‘Model City of Clean Air’ through public-private cooperation and coexistence.”
