[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Gokseong-gun, Jeollanam-do announced the 59th Gokseong Statistical Yearbook on the 24th through its homepage.
According to Gokseong-gun on the 24th, this statistical yearbook contains information on 225 items across 17 sectors including population, businesses, public administration, and judiciary, based on data surveyed as of the end of December 2018.
The county plans to use this data as a basic resource for establishing customized policies for residents, and hopes that local citizens as well as those interested in Gokseong-gun will be able to grasp the changes in the region at a glance and utilize the information in various ways.
According to the yearbook, the registered population as of the end of 2018 was 29,624, showing a decrease of 507 compared to the previous year, while the number of households increased by 41 to 15,131. This trend of decreasing population but increasing households is believed to be influenced by the aging population and the rise of small families due to an increase in single-person households.
The number of businesses, an indicator that can infer economic conditions, totaled 2,104, an increase of 66 from the previous year. The number of employees also rose by 351 to 11,294. The increase in both the number of businesses and employees compared to the previous year suggests a maintained momentum in the local economy of Gokseong-gun.
Specifically, by organizational type, sole proprietorships were the most numerous with 1,939 businesses, an increase of 492. By industry classification, wholesale and retail trade (530 businesses) and accommodation and food services (436 businesses) were the most common. This indicates a trend of increasing sole proprietorships in industries that have direct contact with local residents.
The number of tourists visiting Gokseong in 2018 was surveyed at 3,006,657. The number of tourists surged around festival periods. The highest number of tourists was recorded in May, with 610,851 visitors during the 8th Gokseong World Rose Festival. In October, during the 18th Gokseong Simcheong Festival, the number of tourists was 271,611. On the other hand, outside festival periods, an average of about 200,000 visitors were recorded.
The number of criminal incidents decreased by about 25% compared to the previous year. At the end of 2018, the total number of crimes was 534, a reduction of 185 cases. This is attributed to a notable decrease in intelligent crimes and special law crimes. However, the number of suspects under 14 years old increased to 10.
