Suncheon-si Delivers 'School Meal Eco-friendly Agricultural Product Packages' to Student Households
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Heo Seok) announced on the 23rd that it will sequentially supply the ‘School Meal Organic Agricultural Products Package’ to students’ homes by the 29th to help farmers who supply school meal ingredients whose sales channels have been blocked due to the prolonged COVID-19 school opening delay, and to provide healthy food to students.
The city invested a budget of 1.67 billion KRW (18% provincial funds, 42% city funds, 40% school burden) to support 46,573 students at 341 locations including local daycare centers, kindergartens, and elementary, middle, and high schools.
On the 10th, at the School Meal Supply Price Working Council hosted by Suncheon City with participation from the Suncheon Office of Education and ingredient suppliers, the items for the agricultural product packages were decided, and student addresses were collected from each school. Delivery has been underway since the 17th through school meal suppliers.
The main items in the organic agricultural product packages consist of rice, cucumber, water parsley, zucchini, tofu, etc., produced locally. Daycare and kindergarten children receive three items worth about 24,000 KRW per person, while elementary, middle, and high school students receive six items worth about 40,000 KRW per person.
Mayor Heo Seok of Suncheon said, “This organic agricultural product package project is expected to greatly help farmers who are struggling due to the suspension of school meals,” and added, “We will continue to actively promote various policies to support citizens facing difficulties due to COVID-19.”
