Former CEO of Korail Tech Sentenced to 3 Years Probation for Hiring Orders Based on Bribery Requests
[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] The former CEO of Korail Tech, who was indicted for assisting in the hiring of a specific person upon a request from an acquaintance, was sentenced to 1 year in prison with a 3-year probation and ordered to perform 400 hours of community service.
On the 23rd, according to Judge Song Jin-ho of the Criminal Division 7 at Daejeon District Court, Mr. A (60) helped with the hiring of Mr. B at the time of a public competitive recruitment for public service positions in December 2018, upon a request from a journalist with whom he had a close relationship.
He raised Mr. B’s evaluation score through an employee who participated as an internal interviewer during the hiring process. Mr. B reportedly received a high evaluation score as indicated by Mr. A, which enabled him to be hired.
The fact that Mr. A received a request from the journalist was revealed during the prosecution’s investigation.
Accordingly, the Daejeon District Court stated, “The defendant (Mr. A) infringed upon the free judgment based on the discretion of the interviewers,” and “the social harm caused by undermining the fairness of the procedure is severe.”
However, the court explained the sentencing reason by saying, “The sentence was determined considering that the defendant admitted the crime and showed remorse.”
