Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education to Support 50% of Tuition Fees for Private Kindergartens in March-April
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Jun-kyung] Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education announced on the 21st that it will support 50% of the tuition refund for March and April to alleviate the financial deficits of private kindergartens and the burden on parents due to the prolonged closure.
As COVID-19 has prolonged, parents have been required to pay tuition even though their children do not attend kindergarten, causing dissatisfaction among parents. Kindergartens are also facing operational difficulties due to financial deficits caused by an increase in unregistered and withdrawn children.
In principle, specialized activity fees, meal fees, textbook fees, material fees, and other optional expenses (such as field trip fees) among the parental burden must be refunded.
Although there is no obligation to refund tuition fees, if private kindergartens return the fees to parents, the Office of Education and the government have agreed to support half of the amount.
The support targets are private kindergartens that have fully refunded or carried over (exempted) the tuition fees for March and April and have paid the full salaries of their affiliated teachers. Eligible kindergartens must submit the project application form and related supporting documents to the Education Support Office by the 4th of next month.
Jung Jong-hyuk, Director of Elementary and Early Childhood Education, said, “Although everyone is facing difficulties due to the prolonged closure caused by COVID-19, if kindergartens, the Office of Education, and the Ministry of Education overcome the difficulties together, it will be an opportunity to increase trust. We will do our best to ensure that prompt financial support provides practical help to both kindergartens and parents.”
