Pohang City to Hold 'Climate Change Week' from 22nd to 28th in Commemoration of 'Earth Day'
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Young-wook] Pohang City announced on the 21st that it will designate the period from the 22nd to the 28th as "Climate Change Week" to raise awareness of the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and practice low-carbon living in celebration of the "50th Earth Day."
To foster social consensus and encourage action, the city plans to promote activities such as "unplugging unused home appliances," "separating recyclable waste," "using shopping bags instead of plastic bags," and "walking for short distances" mainly through online platforms and social media.
Additionally, starting at 7:30 a.m. on the 22nd, a low-carbon living campaign will be held to promote Climate Change Week to citizens commuting to work, with minimal participation from seven organizations including the Pohang Climate Change Education Center and the Pohang Sustainable Development Council.
On the 22nd and 23rd, to prevent COVID-19, the "Refuse for the Earth" campaign will be conducted outdoors at Pohang Cheolgilsup (Railroad Forest) with social distancing measures, focusing on photo exhibitions and displays. The Pohang Climate Change Education Center (Pohang Environmental School) will lead efforts to promote the practice of "STOP paper receipts, plastic bags, and disposable products," provide information on joining the Carbon Point System, and hold exhibitions of climate change photos and infographics.
In particular, starting at 8 p.m. on Earth Day, the 22nd, a nationwide lights-out event will be held for 10 minutes to protect the Earth. This event will involve 45 public institutions including Pohang City Hall, Nam-gu and Buk-gu District Offices, and Eup/Myeon/Dong Administrative Welfare Centers, as well as major facilities with landscape lighting such as POSCO, Pohang Canal Hall, and Hyeongsan Big Bridge, along with participation from citizens.
