Let's Standardize the Sign Language Expression for the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jong-gil] The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language announced on the 21st recommended sign language expressions for ‘Jilbyeong Gwalli Bonbu’ (Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency) and ‘Jungang Jaenan Anjeon Daechak Bonbu’ (Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters). These two terms have been frequently used due to the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), but various sign language expressions were mixed, causing difficulties in accurate communication.
The recommendations were prepared by the newly launched Sae Sueo Moim (New Sign Language Group) last month. This group includes sign language experts such as officials from the Korea Deaf Association, sign language interpreters (public sign language interpreters and interpreters for the hearing impaired), sign language teachers, and linguistics majors. They collect sign language expressions from the deaf community and review them biweekly. An official explained, “In the deaf community, it is often difficult for unified sign language for technical terms or neologisms to spread quickly. If sign language interpreters use different signs individually, it becomes difficult for deaf people to access related information.”
