View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Dobong-gu (Mayor Dong-jin Lee) is recruiting 24 musician households to move into the ‘Youth Musicians Rental Housing’ located within the ‘Northeast Area Generation-Convergence Complex Facility (84 Madeul-ro 13-gil, Dobong-gu)’ built by the Seoul Metropolitan Government.
The application period is from April 27 to May 1.
The ‘Youth Musicians Rental Housing’ is located in the Chang-dong new economic center development area, which is promoting the construction of ‘Seoul Arena,’ the country’s first popular music specialized performance hall.
In particular, Chang-dong is a region fostering a music ecosystem through the influx and nurturing of young creative talents.
The district is implementing policies to support residential and activity spaces for young creators to build the Chang-dong music ecosystem. This supply of youth musician housing is the first residential support facility implemented as part of the long-term plan to create a music ecosystem.
The ‘Youth Musicians Rental Housing’ is a 5-minute walk from Exit 1 of Chang-dong Station. It offers 23 units of 15㎡ and 1 unit of 23㎡. For the 15㎡ units, the deposit is 10 million KRW with a monthly rent of about 250,000 KRW. If the rental deposit is converted up to 60 million KRW, the monthly rent drops to approximately 46,000 KRW, which is very affordable compared to the surrounding market prices.
Additionally, individual heating and cooling systems, refrigerators, washing machines, induction cooktops, and other appliances are installed, making it convenient for single-person households to live comfortably.
A total of 24 households will be recruited. Eligible applicants are young people aged 19 to 39 without home ownership who work in the music industry. There are no residency restrictions.
Applications can be submitted via email (yas7@dobong.go.kr) or by mail (5th floor, New Economic Project Division, 656 Madeul-ro, Dobong-gu, Seoul).
The applicant household’s average monthly income must be 100% or less of the previous year’s average monthly income for urban workers’ households (2,645,147 KRW for a single-person household). After document screening and income and asset verification, successful applicants will be announced on August 7, and move-in will begin around October.
Youth musicians wishing to apply can refer to the application form and required documents in the announcement posted on the Dobong-gu website or the Seoul Housing and Communities Corporation website.
The ‘Northeast Area Generation-Convergence Complex Facility,’ where the housing is located, is a generation-sharing complex facility that redesigns the second life of young entrepreneurs and middle-aged people. It consists of the Startup Advancement Center, 50+ Northern Campus, Northeast Area NPO Center, and includes the ‘Youth Musicians Rental Housing’ as a residential support facility.
Furthermore, since 2018, the district has been operating the ‘Open Chang-dong Project Group (OPCD)’ on the first floor of Platform Chang-dong 61 to support the activities of music creators.
Starting this year, the ‘Partners’ program is being operated to provide networking opportunities for musicians to interact.
In addition, to revitalize the music creation activities of young musicians, public studios are being established around Chang-dong Station to support musicians’ activity spaces.
Moreover, Dobong-gu was designated as a regional strategic industry support housing site by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in 2018 due to the Chang-dong new economic center development project’s focus on fostering the music industry. In 2023, the Startup and Cultural Industry Complex (Seed Cube Chang-dong) will be completed, providing housing for 200 young musicians.
Mayor Dong-jin Lee of Dobong-gu stated, “We are striving to create ‘Dobong-gu, the Music City,’ where music is economically revitalized based on Seoul Arena. Starting with this ‘Youth Musicians Rental Housing,’ we will continue to provide various support so that many musicians can gather in Chang-dong and nurture their dreams together.” He added, “Since there are no regional restrictions for this recruitment, we hope many musicians from other regions will participate and create music together in Chang-dong.”
