Mayor Lee issued a statement on the afternoon of the 20th, saying, “Gwangju City expresses deep concern about the spread of community infections and urges the full cancellation of the large-scale rally and city march prepared by Jayu Yeondae.”
He explained, “The government and all citizens are making every effort to block the coronavirus. Although the number of confirmed cases has recently decreased, there is still a high risk of group infections, so Gwangju City has canceled or postponed most commemorative events except for the May 18 40th anniversary ceremony.”
He continued, “May 18 should no longer be a tool for political strife, and the truth of May 18 is not a matter of conflict between conservatives and progressives. However, it is truly regrettable that there are still forces distorting the truth and inciting ideological conflicts and regional sentiments,” emphasizing, “On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of May 18, it is time to put an end to the history of discord and achieve national unity.”
