'Kingdom' Writer Kim Eun-hee "Compared to Current Situation... Reflected on Leaders" US Interview
[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Hee-eun Park] Writer Kim Eun-hee answered questions related to the Netflix series "Kingdom" in an interview with a U.S. entertainment media outlet.
The U.S. entertainment media "The Hollywood Reporter" published an interview with writer Kim Eun-hee on the 17th (local time).
In the interview, Kim said that it is inevitable for the current situation of the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) to be compared with the plot of Kingdom, which deals with an epidemic.
She further explained, "I did not want to deal with an apocalyptic story in Kingdom. No matter how difficult it was, I wanted the characters to run toward hope."
Continuing, Kim said, "(In Kingdom) there are characters who fight against the epidemic, those who give up, and those who use the epidemic to increase their power. If viewers focus on such characters, I think the fear of the epidemic can also be alleviated."
On that day, Kim revealed, "While writing Kingdom, the phrase 'What is politics?' was written on the whiteboard in my studio," adding, "'When faced with a crisis caused by an unknown disease, who is the right leader who thinks of the people?' was my question."
She also said, "Personally, I think the Korean government, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, and medical staff responded well to (COVID-19)."
