Sejong Supports Direct Agricultural Product Sales with Assistance Worth 35 Million Won
[Asia Economy (Sejong) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Sejong City supported direct transactions of agricultural products, enabling local farms to achieve sales worth approximately 35 million KRW.
The city announced on the 14th that it achieved this result by promoting direct transactions of agricultural products from farms, considering the increasing damage to farms due to the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
The direct transaction event was organized as a place where local farmers, who were facing difficulties in sales channels due to disruptions in school meal deliveries, could directly trade agricultural products with local citizens and public institution workers.
To support potato farms in Janggun-myeon, shiitake mushroom farms in Geumnam-myeon, Sejong City Rice Cooperative, and Sejong City Strawberry Association, 21 public institutions including the city hall, education office, and national research complexes rolled up their sleeves.
Through this, last month the city promoted the first round of direct transactions of agricultural products from local farms such as kimchi varieties including cabbage kimchi and young radish kimchi suppliers, and leafy vegetables like spinach and young radish greens, achieving sales of 1.7 tons of kimchi (worth approximately 6.4 million KRW) and 445 boxes of leafy vegetables (worth approximately 2.891 million KRW).
In the second round of direct transactions, sales were recorded at approximately 26.24 million KRW, including 433 boxes of potatoes (4.33 million KRW), 1,142 boxes of shiitake mushrooms (9.136 million KRW), 442 bags of Samgwang rice (11.4 million KRW), and 229 boxes of strawberries (1.374 million KRW).
The city judged that the operation of direct transactions has helped farms struggling with sales channels due to COVID-19, and plans to continue promoting direct transactions connecting local farms and consumers.
Shin Mun-ho, head of the Local Food Division of the city, said, “As school openings have been delayed due to COVID-19, the damage to local farmers is increasing day by day. The city will continue to support farmers in distress by opening direct transactions where farms and consumers can meet directly in various ways.”
