"Cho Kuk and Yoon Seokyeol" Return to the Eye of the Storm... United Future Party to Reveal Nth Room-Related Tips This Weekend
[Asia Economy, reporters Park Chuleung and Kim Hyemin] "Cho Kuk and Yoon Seokyeol" have once again emerged as central figures in the ruling and opposition parties' fierce exchanges as the general election nears its end. The United Future Party claims that if one traces back the "Nth Room" case, there are suspicions that former Minister Cho Kuk, during his tenure as Senior Presidential Secretary for Civil Affairs at the Blue House, was involved in covering up the Burning Sun investigation. The party also plans to reveal information over the weekend regarding tips alleging connections between the Democratic Party and the Nth Room case. Meanwhile, the Democratic Party is emphasizing the need for prosecutorial reform, citing suspicions of collusion between the prosecution and the media.
Lee Jinbok, head of the United Future Party's election campaign committee, told reporters at the National Assembly on the 10th, "The party's special task force (TF committee) on the Nth Room case has received many tips, and we intend to present them." When asked if these tips involved connections between the Nth Room case and the Democratic Party, he said, "I've heard such stories, but nothing has been specifically confirmed yet."
On April 8, during an appearance on a conservative internet broadcast, he said, "The review of the tips has reached a considerable level, and by the weekend, the public will see and find these people (the Democratic Party) to be hypocritical. As for us, apart from the occasional slip of the tongue, we have neither power, money, nor influence, so there is nothing that could really blow up. The Democratic Party, on the other hand, has hidden many things, and I say there are many things that could come to light because that's what I've heard."
Some speculate that these allegations may involve a ruling party figure being implicated in the fraud activities of Jo Joo-bin, the main perpetrator of the Nth Room case, or even that a related figure's name is on the Nth Room list. Kim Sanggyo, a whistleblower in the Burning Sun case who is participating in the United Future Party's Nth Room case task force, claimed on April 7, "Last year, I spoke about the Nth Room case when I met a senior member of the Democratic Party, but it was ignored."
The United Future Party has also made former Minister Cho Kuk a primary target in this general election. Kim Woong, a former chief prosecutor and United Future Party candidate for Songpa-gap in Seoul, told Asia Economy in a phone interview, "It was during the Burning Sun case that the online trade of drug-induced sexual exploitation materials first surfaced. If the investigation had been properly conducted at that time, the Nth Room case might have been prevented. I am well aware of the progress of the Burning Sun investigation. Superintendent Yoon Kyugeun, who was suspected of providing protection, even admitted himself that the investigation was insufficient, and above him was Cho Kuk, who was then the Senior Presidential Secretary for Civil Affairs."
The Democratic Party, on the other hand, is already preparing to respond, claiming that the United Future Party is orchestrating a political scheme related to the Nth Room case. The party is mindful of suspicions that a Channel A reporter and prosecutors colluded to dig up dirt on Rhyu Si-min, chairman of the Roh Moo-hyun Foundation. Democratic Party leader Lee Haechan recently appeared on a podcast and said, "Regarding Chairman Rhyu's case, there is not just one, but another that I am aware of. We have almost figured out the whole picture, so we have formed a special countermeasures committee. We are preparing for the time when there are only three or four days left before the election, when there is little time for a counterattack."

Meanwhile, Prosecutor General Yoon Seokyeol is embroiled in allegations of family corruption and is at the center of controversy after reportedly rejecting an internal inspection by the Supreme Prosecutors' Office's Inspection Department regarding the so-called "prosecutor-media collusion" allegations. The Democratic Party is once again stressing the need for prosecutorial reform. At an election strategy meeting in Gwangju the previous day, leader Lee Haechan said, "If the Democratic Party fails to become the largest party, the United Future Party will take the National Assembly Speaker's seat, and both the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials and prosecutorial reform will come to nothing."
