Democratic Party Honam Regional Election Committee Condemns Candidate Cha Myung-jin's 'Sewol Ferry Controversy' Remarks
"Retire from Politics with a Sincere Apology"
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Democratic Party Honam Region Election Countermeasures Committee (Standing Election Committee Chairman Lee Gaeho, Co-Chairmen Seo Samsuk and Song Gapseok, Central Election Committee Co-Chairman Lee Hyeongseok) condemned the Sewol Ferry remarks made by Cha Myungjin, the United Future Party candidate, on the 9th and urged Cha to retire from politics.
Jang Seil, Chief Spokesperson of the Democratic Party Honam Region Election Committee, stated in a press release on the same day, “It has become known that Candidate Cha made outrageous remarks about the Sewol Ferry victims' families during the debate hosted by the Election Commission on the 6th, which has drawn national condemnation,” adding, “We cannot help but feel shock and horror at these irrational remarks, and we sincerely offer our heartfelt condolences to the Sewol Ferry victims' families who have suffered irreparable emotional wounds due to these abusive words.”
He continued, “Candidate Cha is not qualified to be a member of the National Assembly and must immediately declare his retirement from politics and take legal and political responsibility.”

He also added, “Although six full years have passed since the Sewol Ferry disaster, the pain of that day still lingers at Jindo Paengmok Port, where yellow ribbons flutter, and at Mokpo New Port, where the Sewol Ferry is docked,” and “If there is no sincere and profound apology for the reckless remarks that only reopen these wounds instead of trying to soothe the pain, the candidate will face the stern judgment of the people.”
