Seoul Namsan Gugakdang, Recruiting Young Artists Based on Traditional Arts
[Asia Economy Reporter Byunghee Park] Seoul Namsan Gugakdang is recruiting participating artists for the '2020 Young Gugak Directors'.
'Young Gugak Directors' is a youth gugak support project by Seoul Namsan Gugakdang, promoted under the 'Business Agreement for Revitalizing Namsan Gugakdang' signed between the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the confectionery specialist group Crown Haitai. It started in 2018 as a support program with a competition format under the concept of a 'Gugak audition', and last year it transformed into a traditional arts-based new content development project focusing on collaboration with various genres rather than competition.
Through Young Gugak Directors, various emerging gugak artists such as Heistring, Mureu, and Ggakdugi have been discovered and are actively performing. In June and July, works by Park Seonju, Lee Dongbin, and Nam Woochan, who were finally selected through the '2019 Young Gugak Directors', will be staged as official planned performances at Seoul Namsan Gugakdang in 2020.
This year's '2020 Young Gugak Directors' strengthens its nature as an incubating support program that goes beyond selecting excellent content to provide opportunities to concretize ideas that were at the initial planning stage and bring them to the stage.
The '2020 Young Gugak Directors' supports each selected artist with 10 million KRW for showcase production costs and 3 million KRW for research and development costs. In addition, the scope of applicants has been broadened to include young artists active in various genres, not limited to gugak majors.
Above all, it fully supports the step-by-step creative preparation process from the initial planning stage with customized mentoring, expert creative workshops, and showcase production.

'2020 Young Gugak Directors' supports young artists aged 19 to 34, and any individual creator capable of creating original performance content based on tradition can apply. Applications can be submitted from the 2nd until 6 PM on the 26th, by downloading the application form from the Namsangol Hanok Village Seoul Namsan Gugakdang website, filling it out, and submitting it via email.
