'5G 5 Million Subscribers Milestone'... SK Telecom Market Share at 44.9%
53.6 Million Subscribers as of February... 400,000 Increase from January
5G Market Share: KT 30.3%, LG Uplus 24.8% Reported
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] The number of 5G subscribers surpassed 5 million just over a year after its commercialization. This milestone was reached 11 months after the introduction of 5G on April 3 last year.
According to the Ministry of Science and ICT on the 1st, as of the end of February, the number of 5G subscribers was counted at 5,366,699. This is an increase of 402,260 (8.1%) compared to the end of January (4,958,439).
By telecom company, SK Telecom had the highest number of subscribers at 2,407,413, followed by KT with 1,622,015 and LG Uplus with 1,330,953. Additionally, 318 5G subscribers were reported through MVNOs (Mobile Virtual Network Operators).
In terms of 5G mobile phone market share, SK Telecom accounted for 44.9%. KT held 30.3%, and LG Uplus accounted for 24.8%. MVNOs had a 5G market share of approximately 0.59%.
The proportion of 5G subscribers among all mobile phone service subscribers was 9.5%. As of the end of February, the total number of mobile phone service subscribers was 56,235,381.

Meanwhile, the three major telecom companies plan to invest 4 trillion won in 5G in the first half of this year alone. This year, they intend to expand investments in in-building and regional city infrastructure, as well as increase investments in 5G services such as smart factories and killer content.
