Jung Kyung-doo, Minister of National Defense: "The name of the next escort ship will be 'Cheonanham'"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yang Nak-gyu] Defense Minister Jeong Kyeong-du stated, "We are considering naming one of the next Korean-class frigates as Cheonanham."
At the memorial service for the 10th anniversary of the Cheonanham attack held on the 26th at the Pyeongtaek 2nd Fleet Command, Minister Jeong said, "Our people and military are doing their best to ensure that the sacred sacrifice of the 46 Cheonanham warriors who died defending the nation's seas is remembered forever."
This statement officially confirms that the Cheonanham, displayed at the Security Park of the Pyeongtaek 2nd Fleet Command, will be revived as a new Korean-class frigate as early as 2024 to undertake the mission of protecting territorial waters. Minister Jeong became the first sitting defense minister to personally preside over the Cheonanham memorial ceremony.
Minister Jeong said, "We will honor the sacrifice and loyalty of the Cheonanham warriors and continue the maritime defense spirit of the proud 46 Cheonanham warriors," adding, "We look forward to the day when the revived Cheonanham, in its new form, will boldly protect the seas of the Republic of Korea as the next main combat ship of the regional fleet, cutting through rough waves."
