Gwanak-gu, Thorough Cleaning of Senior Centers During Temporary Closure Period
Thorough Cleaning and Disinfection of Senior Centers to Prevent Community Spread of COVID-19
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Junhee) has taken the opportunity of the temporary closure of senior centers due to COVID-19 to conduct thorough cleaning and disinfection of senior centers in the area.
A district official explained, "We are making good use of the period when all senior centers are temporarily closed due to COVID-19 to help ensure that when the elderly return to the senior centers, they can live in a clean and pleasant environment."
Every year, volunteers personally cleaned the senior centers, but this year, due to COVID-19, a professional cleaning company is carrying out thorough indoor and outdoor cleaning and disinfection of the senior centers. They are also improving the environment by replacing heavily contaminated wallpaper or flooring.
The senior center cleaning project, which began with the launch of the 7th local government administration, was first implemented following Mayor Park Junhee’s policy direction of "serving the elderly and practicing filial piety."
So far, cleaning has been conducted at 32 locations and wallpaper replaced at 8 locations. Due to high satisfaction among the elderly, the number of senior centers targeted for maintenance is being expanded every year to promote environmental improvement projects.
The head of a senior center in Sillim-dong said, "We are very grateful that they came to remove the long-standing grime from the senior center," adding, "When COVID-19 ends and people return to use the senior center, everyone will be happy."
Since the early days of the COVID-19 outbreak, Gwanak-gu has been thoroughly preventing the spread of COVID-19 in the community by regularly disinfecting 113 public and private senior centers with the help of staff from 21 neighborhood community centers and the Saemaul Leaders Association.
