"Shake Off COVID-19 Depression by Growing Crops"... Mapo-gu Distributes Box Gardens
Pre-registration until the 2nd of next month, 1,700 easy-to-grow box garden sets available... 80% of the price covered by the district, participants pay only 20% (8,000 KRW per set)
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Mapo-gu (Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun) announced that it will lease box gardens, which allow easy cultivation of eco-friendly crops in various living spaces, until April 2.
Box gardens are emerging as a popular urban agriculture method because they allow many people to conveniently grow crops within homes and residential buildings.
Accordingly, the district plans to lease a total of 1,700 sets of box gardens this year. Two types (Type A and Type B) with different shapes and sizes will be leased, 850 sets each, and the district will support 80% of the purchase cost to promote urban agriculture.
Therefore, participants only need to pay 8,000 KRW, which is 20% of the price (market price 40,000 KRW).
For public institutions and national/public educational institutions, 100% of the box garden purchase cost will be supported.
Box garden leasing is available to Mapo-gu residents and public and educational institutions located in Mapo-gu. Individuals can lease up to 5 sets, and public institutions (Mapo-gu affiliated organizations, Seoul city affiliated organizations, government affiliated organizations) and educational institutions (kindergartens, elementary, middle, and high schools) can lease up to 15 sets per institution.
The district will recruit applicants on a first-come, first-served basis until April 2. Applications can be submitted online through the Mapo-gu Office website under ‘Communication and Participation - Online Reservation/Application - Integrated Online Application.’ However, for seniors and others who have difficulty using the internet, in-person applications will be accepted as an exception at the Regional Economy Division (8th floor) of Mapo-gu Office. Applications will be accepted only until supplies run out.
After participant selection and confirmation of payment, the box gardens will be distributed between April 7 and 10 and will be delivered directly to the applicant’s address. For more details about the box garden leasing, please check the Mapo-gu Office website.

Yoo Dong-gyun, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “Due to the prolonged time spent in limited spaces caused by the spread of COVID-19 and the resulting COVID blues (depression caused by COVID-19), I hope that growing crops through these box gardens will provide a small source of strength to many people struggling.”
