Gyeonggi Council Fully Supports Lee Jae-myung's 'Disaster Basic Income' Decision
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] The Gyeonggi Provincial Council has expressed full support for Gyeonggi Province's decision to implement the 'Gyeonggi-do Type Disaster Basic Income' to overcome the economic crisis caused by the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.
Song Han-jun, Chairman of the Gyeonggi Provincial Council (Democratic Party of Korea, Ansan 1), and Yeom Jong-hyun, Representative Member of the Democratic Party of Korea (Bucheon 1), held a joint press conference with Gyeonggi Governor Lee Jae-myung at the Gyeonggi Provincial Government briefing room on the 24th, promising full cooperation from the council to ensure the smooth implementation of the disaster basic income.
Chairman Song stated, "Currently, the Gyeonggi Provincial Council is reviewing a supplementary budget to support small and medium-sized enterprises and small business owners who are suffering severe hardships due to COVID-19, and to revive the economic ecosystem throughout Gyeonggi Province," adding, "Among these efforts, the introduction of disaster basic income will be the optimal measure to overcome this national disaster."
Representative Yeom also explained, "The Gyeonggi-do Type Disaster Basic Income is not wasteful or populist, but a support pillar for residents exhausted by life and small business owners who are collapsing," and added, "We expect that the disaster basic income, boldly decided by Gyeonggi Province without discrimination by party or class, will serve as a catalyst to uplift the lives of residents."
The Gyeonggi-do Type Basic Disaster Income is a 'universal disaster income' provided to all residents regardless of income or age.
According to this decision, the province will provide 100,000 KRW per resident starting in April in the form of local currency.
