Jungnang-gu, Desilting Storm Drains to Prepare for Flood Prevention
From March to October, Continuous Cleaning and Maintenance through Storm Drain Dredging to Create a Safe and Clean Jungnang-gu... Employment of 35 Seniors as "Storm Drain Guardians" Creating Jobs, Approximately 24,000 Storm Drains Scheduled for Dredging and Maintenance until October
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) has officially started the desilting work of rainwater drains from the 16th to protect the safety of residents from flood damage and to improve public health and hygiene.
The desilting work will involve removing various debris (cigarette butts, gum, food waste, etc.) inside the rainwater drains and collecting illegal covers on the drains.
This will ensure smooth drainage during rainfall and prevent foul odors caused by the decomposition of accumulated debris.
Additionally, to facilitate smooth desilting work and create job opportunities for seniors, 35 residents aged 55 and older living in Jungnang-gu have been hired as temporary workers for the rainwater drain desilting project. The hired seniors are scheduled to serve as rainwater drain managers starting in April.
The rainwater drain managers will normally produce and install sandbags for desilting and flood prevention. During the rainy season, they will inspect the condition of rainwater drains in each neighborhood, remove illegal covers, check for flooding in low-lying underground houses during heavy rain, and patrol sedimentation basins.
Until May 15, before the full-scale flood prevention period, the focus will be on intensive desilting, aiming to complete 100% desilting of approximately 24,000 rainwater drains in Jungnang-gu. This work is planned to be carried out about four times until October.
