Songpa-gu District Office (Mayor Seongsu Park) selected the irregular-shaped work proposed by Withworks A&E Architects as the winning design in the Seokchon Lake Art Gallery design competition.
Songpa-gu is making the area around Seokchon Lake a cultural and artistic hub by creating various cultural spaces. As a core project, the Seokchon Lake Art Gallery will be built with an investment of approximately 6.6 billion KRW, consisting of one basement floor and three above-ground floors, with a total floor area within 1,500㎡.
Earlier, Songpa-gu publicly solicited design proposals for the Seokchon Lake Art Gallery for eight weeks from January 2 to February 25.
As a result, a total of 24 works were submitted, and Songpa-gu conducted two rounds of evaluations. The judging criteria included: △ whether the building harmonizes with the geographical features of Seokchon Lake and Songpa Naru Park △ whether the building itself is a work of art △ whether the structure has an identity that fulfills the gallery’s inherent functions △ whether accessibility and convenience for users are considered △ and whether the space is efficiently arranged.
The judging committee evaluated that the work by Withworks A&E Architects harmonizes with Seokchon Lake, the surrounding parks, and green spaces. They also cited the excellence of its sculptural beauty, free spatial composition, and presence as outstanding points.
Songpa-gu added that it will proceed with the detailed design of the Seokchon Lake Art Gallery by referring to additional advice from the judging committee. Afterward, following the review by the Seoul City Urban Park Committee, construction is planned to begin within this year with the goal of completion in 2022.
