Creating a 'Waterfront and Marine Tourism' Space on Idle Land at Guryongpo Port
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Joo Sang-don] On the 12th, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced that it has launched the "Guryongpo Port Redevelopment Commercialization Plan Establishment Project," aimed at transforming the idle land created by dumping dredged soil inside Guryongpo Port into a waterfront and marine tourism space.
The dredged soil dumping site at Guryongpo Port was completed in 2006 and has since been used as a tetrapod manufacturing site for nearby breakwater construction. Since Pohang City designated the area around Guryongpo Port as the "Guryongpo Gwamegi Industrial Special Zone" in 2007, related specialized industries have been promoted. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries expects that developing the area into a waterfront and marine tourism space, linked with the Guryongpo tourism axis that connects Guryongpo Port, the modern cultural historic street, drama filming locations, and Guryongpo Beach, will attract even more tourists.
The Ministry plans to conduct surveys and business briefings targeting local residents, organizations, and relevant local governments to establish the port redevelopment commercialization plan reflecting the historical, cultural, personal, and geographical characteristics of the Guryongpo Port area. They will also actively gather opinions from experts and stakeholders.
This project is expected to be completed around December this year. Based on this, the Ministry plans to hold a public contest next year to attract private investors.
