Minsaengdang, Disagreement Over Proportional Representation Nomination Rules... Failure to Launch Election Committee and Nomination Committee
Bareunmiraedang Faction's 'Ban on Incumbent Proportional Re-election'... Strong Backlash from Minjupyeonghwa Party Faction
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] The launch of the Minsaeng Party's Election Countermeasures Committee and Nomination Management Committee has failed. The party leadership could not reconcile differences over participation in the proportional representation coalition party and the rules for proportional representation nominations. In particular, the Bareunmirae Party faction and the Democratic Peace Party faction are strongly clashing over the "ban on re-election of incumbent lawmakers as proportional representatives" clause.
Co-representative Kim Jeong-hwa said to reporters after the Supreme Council meeting on the afternoon of the 11th, "There were some differences of opinion regarding the formation of the Nomination Management Committee with the proportional representation coalition party in mind," adding, "(The formation of the Election Countermeasures Committee and Nomination Management Committee) should have been done, but it seems difficult today."
Regarding the clause banning the re-election of incumbent lawmakers as proportional representatives, Co-representative Kim said, "There was also someone who strongly opposed the idea that exceptions could be made if necessary for election strategy," and "So we could not narrow the differences on that either."
On the proposal to form the Nomination Management Committee by dividing between constituency and proportional representatives, Co-representative Kim explained, "I don't know if that was said with the intention of participating in the proportional representation coalition party, but there was also a statement expressing a preference not to establish a proportional representation Nomination Management Committee."
Earlier, the Bareunmirae Party faction proposed including in the party rules that "proportional representation candidates should be political newcomers and incumbent lawmakers cannot be elected," to dispel criticism that some lawmakers were only eyeing proportional representation. In response, the Democratic Peace Party faction strongly opposed this and boycotted the last Supreme Council meeting. Then, the Bareunmirae Party faction accused Co-representative Park Joo-hyun of deliberately disrupting the Supreme Council to secure her own proportional representation seat.
