Gangdong Food Bank Market 'Hope Package' Support
Support of 'Hope Package' for Crisis Households in Need Amid COVID-19... 'Hope Package' Filled with Essentials like Rice, Ready-to-Eat Food, Ramen, Toiletries, and More
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) has implemented a support service called the ‘Hope Package’ food market to replace the Gangdong Food Bank Market, which has been suspended since the 2nd to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The Gangdong Food Bank Market is a sharing space that receives donations of food and daily necessities and provides them to neighbors in need. Registered users can visit the store once a month to receive the items they want.
There are 1,000 registered members, with about 900 monthly users.
Although residents who urgently need daily necessities use this facility, it was inevitably closed to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Accordingly, Gangdong-gu has prepared a plan to produce and support ‘Hope Packages’ consisting of groceries to help crisis households that urgently need food market items and to minimize the occurrence of welfare blind spots.
The ‘Hope Package’ consists of groceries and daily necessities such as rice, prepared foods, ramen, and toiletries purchased within the food market support amount (40,000 to 50,000 KRW per month). The support targets are registered members of the Gangdong Food Bank Market, and support is decided through recommendations from the local community center for households that urgently need assistance for their livelihood or are in crisis.
Lee Jeong-hoon, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, said, “Due to the spread of COVID-19, the closure of welfare facilities used by vulnerable groups is also becoming prolonged. We will establish a welfare safety net by preparing various measures to prevent welfare gaps from occurring.”
