President Moon: "World's First 'Atmosphere and Ocean Observation Satellite' Successfully Deployed... Responding to Causes of Fine Dust"
[Asia Economy Reporter Son Sunhee] President Moon Jae-in said on the 9th, "Our country has become the first in the world to continuously observe changes in the atmosphere and marine environment of a region using a geostationary satellite," adding, "Although it has been overshadowed by the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), this is something to be very proud of."
President Moon stated this through his social network service (SNS) accounts, including Facebook, saying, "Our ability to identify the causes of fine dust and respond to them has greatly improved."
He explained, "The 'Chollian Satellite 2B,' launched on the 19th of last month, finally reached its target orbit on the 6th," adding, "The Chollian Satellite 2B is equipped with the world's first observation equipment for fine dust and other air pollutants, enabling us to track the generation and movement of fine dust around the Korean Peninsula." He further expressed expectations that "it will also play a significant role in preserving the marine environment by continuously monitoring the occurrence and movement of marine pollutants such as red tides and oil spills."
President Moon also extended his encouragement to the scientists, researchers, and engineers from the Korea Aerospace Research Institute, the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology, and Korea Aerospace Industries who participated in this 'Geostationary Satellite Complex' project.
He particularly said, "I want to highly commend the fact that the observation equipment and technology were developed purely with domestic technology," and "I also commend the officials from the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Ministry of Environment, and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries who provided unwavering support."
President Moon added, "From 2021, anyone will be able to check the concentration of air pollutants in Asia using a smartphone," and "We will provide not only the information we need but also atmospheric environment information to Asian countries, leading regional joint responses."
