Trump Demands Interest Rate Cut After Signing COVID-19 Response Funding Bill
[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] Confirmed cases and deaths from the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) continue to occur in the United States.
According to U.S. media, on the 6th (local time), the number of COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. exceeded 14, and confirmed cases surpassed 230. The number of states with confirmed cases increased to 21.
In New York State, 11 new COVID-19 patients were reported, bringing the total number of infections to 33. All 11 individuals had contact with a lawyer working at a law firm in Manhattan. This is a typical case of community transmission. Additionally, at least 4,000 people are in quarantine.
Cases were also reported in Massachusetts, Indiana, and Pennsylvania. CNN counted 231 COVID-19 patients in the U.S. as of that morning. By state, Washington had the highest number of infections at 70, followed by California (49) and New York (33).
As the spread of COVID-19 continues in the U.S., New York Governor Andrew Cuomo criticized the federal government's response. Governor Cuomo called the federal government's response "ridiculous and absurd."
U.S. President Donald Trump signed an $8.3 billion emergency budget bill for COVID-19 response approved by Congress. At the White House, signing the bill sent by the Senate the previous day, President Trump told reporters, "We have signed $8.3 billion," emphasizing, "We are doing well. It appeared suddenly, but we are handling it."
Despite the Federal Reserve's surprise 0.5 percentage point interest rate cut on the 3rd, President Trump demanded further rate cuts. He said, "The Fed should cut rates again," and "The Fed should lower rates and stimulate the economy."
