Gurye Arboretum Designated as Jeollanam-do's First Public Arboretum
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yuk Miseok] On the 4th, Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do announced that Gurye Arboretum, covering an area of 54 hectares at 4, San 92, Tapjeong-ri, Sandong-myeon, was registered as Jeollanam-do's first public arboretum on the 1st.
There are a total of 62 officially registered arboretums nationwide, of which 30 are public arboretums operated by local governments, and Gurye Arboretum is the only one in Jeollanam-do.
Gurye Arboretum was established to contribute to the preservation of plant genetic resources in the southern inland region and to secure national plant species diversity. Additionally, it provides public forest welfare services through research, education, exhibition, collection, and recreation.
Gurye Arboretum is equipped with 13 exhibition main gardens including propagation and cultivation facilities, a winter garden, a shade garden, and the Jirisan Species Conservation Garden, and has planted 1,148 species and 125,329 plants, meeting the registration requirements for a public arboretum under the "Act on the Creation and Promotion of Arboretums and Gardens."
Kim Sun-ho, the mayor of Gurye-gun, stated, "We will use this registration as Jeollanam-do's first public arboretum as a stepping stone to preserve plant genetic resources in the southern inland and Jirisan areas and continuously strive to establish it as a key regional tourism resource."
