[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] On the 2nd, two additional COVID-19 positive cases were confirmed in Gangnam-gu, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in Gangnam-gu to 11.
Jung Soon-gyun, the mayor of Gangnam-gu, held a briefing in the afternoon and stated, "The 50-year-old woman and 54-year-old man who were confirmed positive today are both colleagues working at a brokerage firm located in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam-gu, where a 35-year-old woman who was confirmed positive on the 1st also works. It is presumed that they were infected while working together in the annex building of the company with the 35-year-old woman."
In particular, the 50-year-old woman living in a villa in Nonhyeon-dong was a desk neighbor of the 35-year-old woman who was confirmed positive the day before. She had mild body aches and a sore throat since February 26 and received hospital treatment. Although currently asymptomatic, she was recommended to undergo testing by the Gangnam-gu Public Health Center yesterday and was confirmed positive.
The 54-year-old man living in Banpo-dong, Seocho-gu, is also a colleague who worked with the 35-year-old woman in the annex office of the company. He worked with the 35-year-old woman until leaving work last Friday. After hearing about the woman’s positive diagnosis on the 1st, he underwent testing at the Gangnam Public Health Center during the day and was confirmed positive.
After the 35-year-old woman was confirmed positive on the 1st, Gangnam-gu immediately conducted preemptive testing on four colleagues who worked with her in the company annex at the Gangnam Public Health Center, confirming two of them as positive cases.
With two additional positive cases confirmed on the 2nd, Gangnam-gu has ordered testing for approximately 300 employees working in the annex, main, and new buildings of the company at the Gangnam Public Health Center or their local health centers.
Gangnam-gu also ordered disinfection and temporary closure for 1-2 days of the company’s annex and main buildings, as well as the private hospital in Nonhyeon-dong (referred to as B Hospital) that the 50-year-old woman had visited.
Additionally, Gangnam-gu disinfected six locations identified in the confirmed patients’ movement paths, including a pharmacy, restaurants, coffee shops, and a mart in Nonhyeon-dong. Ten other locations, including relatives’ homes and restaurants in Gwanak-gu, Seocho-gu, Anyang, and Gunpo City, were notified to the respective local governments.
The additional confirmed cases were immediately reported to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency and Seoul City. Preparations are underway to hospitalize them in isolation wards as soon as possible.
The daily occurrence of confirmed cases in Gangnam-gu is attributed to the Gangnam Public Health Center’s proactive testing policy. Regardless of symptoms or residency in Gangnam, close contacts of confirmed cases and visitors to the health center who wish to be tested are all given preemptive testing. Since January 26, a total of 1,220 tests have been conducted, identifying 11 positive cases.
