Encountering Nature of Late Joseon through Paintings... Publication of Real Landscape Painting Catalog
20 Works Including 'Sansu Palgyeongdo' and 'Gwanseo Sipgyeongdo' Featured
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jong-gil] A catalog collecting true-view landscape paintings from the 18th to 19th centuries has been released. The National Museum of Korea announced on the 2nd that it published "Catalog of Korean Calligraphy and Painting Vol. 27 - True-view Landscape Paintings of the Joseon Dynasty 2," which includes landscape paintings and explanations of famous scenic spots nationwide such as Hanyang, Danyang, Pyongyang, and Hamheung.
The catalog features twenty true-view landscape paintings depicting various scenes across the country during the late Joseon period. Included are the 19th-century true-view landscape painting "Sansu Palgyeongdo (山水八景圖)" portraying eight scenic spots along the upper reaches of the Nakdong River, "Gwanseo Sipgyeongdo (關西十景圖)" depicting ten famous sites in Pyeongan Province, and "Gwanbuk Sipseungdo (關北十勝圖)" containing ten renowned scenic spots in Hamgyeong Province selected by Nam Guman.
The catalog also includes "Buyongdangdo (芙蓉堂圖)," a painting of Buyongdang Pavilion in Haeju, Hwanghae Province. Buyongdang, one of the Eight Views of Haeseo, is a pavilion built in 1500 on a pond within Haeju Eupseong. It is famous as the place where King Seonjo stayed while fleeing to Uiju during the Japanese invasions of Korea and on his way back to Seoul.
In addition, the catalog contains many well-known works such as "Inwang Seonyeongdo (仁旺先塋圖)," "Okhojeongdo (玉壺亭圖)," and "Songdo Sajangwon Gyehoedo (松都四壯元契會圖)."
For famous scenic spots in North Korea, glass plate photographs from the Japanese colonial period are included for comparison with paintings of Anju Baeksangru (百祥樓), Pyongyang Bupyeongru (浮碧樓), Seongcheon Gangseonru (降仙樓), Uiju Tonggunjeong (統軍亭), and Anbyeon Seokwangsa (釋王寺). Translations of inscriptions and seals written on the paintings are also provided.

The museum has been publishing the Catalog of Korean Calligraphy and Painting annually since 1991. The previously published "True-view Landscape Paintings of the Joseon Dynasty 1" covers true-view landscape paintings of Geumgangsan. It is available for viewing on the museum’s website.
