Top 3 Domestic Battery Companies Surpass 30% Global Market Share for the First Time Ever
[Asia Economy Reporter Park So-yeon] The combined global market share of the three domestic electric vehicle battery companies has surpassed 30% for the first time ever.
According to energy market research firm SNE Research on the 2nd, among the battery usage in electric vehicles sold in January this year, LG Chem, Samsung SDI, and SK Innovation accounted for 30.8%.
LG Chem's usage more than doubled compared to January last year, surpassing China's CATL to take 2nd place (22.9%).
Samsung SDI ranked 4th with a market share of 5.1%, and SK Innovation jumped five places from the same period last year to 7th place (2.8%).
The 1st place was Japan's Panasonic, accounting for 27.6% of the total, and 3rd place CATL had a market share of 21.8%.
SNE Research explained, "LG Chem's growth was driven mainly by strong sales of the Renault Zoe and Audi e-tron, Samsung SDI by the BMW 330e and Volkswagen Passat GTE, and SK Innovation by the Niro EV and Soul Booster."

Meanwhile, the total global battery usage in January was 7.3 GWh (gigawatt-hours), a 6.2% decrease compared to the same month last year. This is analyzed to be due to the sluggish domestic market of Chinese battery companies including CATL.
