The Seodaemun Prison History Hall is a historic site where many independence activists endured hardships, including Yu Gwan-sun, who died after being imprisoned during the March 1st Movement. It was originally opened in 1908 under the name Gyeongseong Prison by the Japanese colonial government.
To ensure citizens' safety and prevent the spread of COVID-19, the district canceled the annual "Seodaemun, 1919 The Shout of That Day!" event held every March 1st and instead held a simplified memorial ceremony with only senior staff participating.
On this day, Mayor Moon Seok-jin visited the memorial monument inside the history hall and wrote in the guestbook, "The people of Seodaemun-gu will always remember the patriotic martyrs' wishes and cries for independence."
He then offered flowers and incense and observed a moment of silence with senior staff.
He also visited the prison where Yu Gwan-sun died this year, marking the 100th anniversary of her martyrdom, to offer flowers and observe a moment of silence.
Mayor Moon Seok-jin emphasized, "Just as our nation, despite tremendous trials 101 years ago, rose up with the March 1st Movement in the face of threats from guns and swords, our people can overcome the difficulties caused by the coronavirus. Let all citizens unite and work together to overcome this challenge."
