Pre-candidate Lee Seok-hyung: "Implementing the March 1st Spirit as a Value of Coexistence and National Unity Innovation"
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Lee Seok-hyung, the preliminary candidate for the Democratic Party of Korea in Gwangsan-gap, Gwangju Metropolitan City, stated on the 1st, “We will honor the noble spirit of the ancestors who sacrificed their lives for the independence of the nation, inherit the spirit of the March 1st Movement, and continue it as an innovation for national unity.”
Candidate Lee Seok-hyung said, “Today marks the 101st anniversary of the March 1st Independence Movement, when the nation rose up for independence,” adding, “Even during the harsh period of Japanese colonial rule, the Declaration of Independence, which was read with the strong spirit of the Korean people wishing for Korea’s independence, represented the spirit of our nation that did not lose hope even in the face of a national crisis.”
Candidate Lee Seok-hyung has continued the commemoration projects of prominent independence activists such as Bojae Lee Sang-seol (former chairman of the memorial association Lee Seok-hyung), who was the teacher of Korea’s representative independence activist Ahn Jung-geun and worked alongside him in the independence movement, and Ilgang Kim Cheol, a representative independence activist from the Honam region who led the March 1st Movement and the Shanghai Provisional Government. During his tenure as Hampyeong County Governor, when the Shanghai Provisional Government building in China was mentioned as a demolition target due to urban environmental projects in a major Chinese city, he restored and rebuilt the birthplace of Ilgang Kim Cheol in Hamjeong-ri, Singwang-myeon, Hampyeong County, in June 2009, spending 2.2 billion won to preserve its original form.
He emphasized, “The Republic of Korea exists today because of the indomitable courage and passionate desire of our people who never lost hope,” and added, “Inheriting the spirit of the March 1st Movement must be fully carried on as a mission of the era and the people.”
