Special Benefits for Participation and Startup Support in the "SH Cheong Youth Architect Design Competition" Project
[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] Seoul Housing and Communities Corporation (SH Corporation) announced on the 2nd that it will hold the "6th SH Young Architects Design Competition," which proposes spatial welfare programs needed in the region by utilizing architectural assets.
SH Corporation stated that it selected "Spatial Welfare Models Utilizing Architectural Assets" as this year's competition theme to find various models that supply the lacking living SOC in the region by utilizing major architectural assets that form the identity of the region and contribute to regional regeneration.
Architectural assets are defined as those possessing social, economic, and scenic values valid now and in the future, including unique historical and cultural values such as hanok, or those contributing to the promotion of national architectural culture and regional identity. They are categorized into buildings, spatial environments, and infrastructure.
Architectural assets, with their unique historical and cultural values and contribution to regional identity, are also key resources for regional regeneration plans. In 2019, SH Corporation established the Architectural Assets Division under the Urban Regeneration Headquarters to discover, preserve, and explore various ways to utilize Seoul's excellent architectural assets.
The competition is divided into the Studio category (pre-selected) and the General Competition category. Seventeen teams (or individuals) per category, totaling 34 teams, will be selected, increasing the number of awardees compared to previous years. A grand prize of 5 million KRW and a total prize money of 28 million KRW will be awarded. All winners will also receive a separate publication of their works and opportunities for public exhibition in addition to the prize money.
Grand prize, excellence, and encouragement award winners will have the opportunity to participate in the "SH Young Architects-led Spatial Welfare Program" and receive startup support benefits from SH Corporation. If winners choose the startup support benefits, they will be provided with activity spaces and support for construction and operation. Mentoring for space planning and operation, basic startup education, and customized consulting will also be provided.
Applications for the competition can be submitted through the SH Corporation Urban Research Institute website until June 12. Eligible applicants are young people interested in architecture, urban design, landscaping, social economy, and related fields and themes, who are currently enrolled (including on leave) in university or graduate school, or within five years of graduation, either domestically or internationally.
Workshops to enhance understanding of the competition theme will be held in two sessions. The first workshop will take place on April 3, and the second on April 24. Judging will be conducted in two rounds, with 34 awarded works selected in the first round. Among these, 17 excellent works will undergo a second round of judging through public presentations by the proposers, and on July 20, the grand prize, excellence awards, encouragement awards, and honorable mentions will be decided.
Kim Seyong, President of SH Corporation, said, "I hope many young people will participate in establishing spatial welfare models that contribute to the region by utilizing architectural assets," adding, "SH Corporation will serve as a bridge for young people who revitalize regions and communities through spatial welfare models utilizing architectural assets."
