Gwangju City to Support Transportation for Chinese International Students Starting from the 28th
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 26th that it will operate shuttle buses from Incheon Airport and other locations to each university for three weeks starting from the 28th to transport Chinese international students arriving ahead of the start of the semester at each university.
Currently, to prevent the regional spread of COVID-19, each university is transporting Chinese international students using school buses or other means on their own.
The city plans to coordinate with universities to provide transportation for some universities where a small number of students are arriving or self-transportation is difficult, so that no blind spots occur. To minimize social contact of international students during transit, rest areas will be replaced with drowsiness rest stops, and lunch boxes will be provided.
Chinese international students will attend classes only after preparing and implementing measures at each university, such as a two-week dormitory quarantine or self-quarantine (including twice-daily temperature checks) after arrival if no symptoms appear.
So far, the city has held three meetings involving universities and related organizations to discuss measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in preparation for the arrival of Chinese international students. Going forward, the city plans to cooperate closely with universities and related organizations to make every effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The total number of Chinese international students in Gwangju is about 2,500 across 11 universities, with approximately 1,500 expected to arrive.
These universities have activated emergency response committees to delay the semester start date to the 16th of next month and have postponed or canceled group events such as graduation ceremonies, entrance ceremonies, and new student orientations to prevent COVID-19 infection.
