Follow-up Measures After the Pyeongtaek Tower Crane Accident... Frequent Inspections of Similar Equipment
Stop operation immediately if problems are found
Request equipment use restriction to related agencies
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Jiwon] The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 23rd that it will conduct spot inspections not only on the equipment involved in the recent 'tower crane accident' at the Pyeongtaek Smart Factory construction site but also on similar types of equipment.
On the 20th of last month, the main jib of a tower crane transporting construction materials at the Pyeongtaek Smart Factory construction site bent and fell, resulting in the death of one worker.
The accident was investigated to have occurred due to the pin connecting the jib coming off. Accordingly, the Ministry requested local governments to conduct spot inspections on equipment with a similar pin fastening method (13 types, 405 units) to the model involved in the accident.
Equipment that fails the spot inspection will be suspended from operation and other measures will be taken to ensure the safety of the equipment. Additionally, until the safety of similar equipment is confirmed, related organizations such as the Korea Specialty Construction Association will be asked to refrain from using such equipment at construction sites.
Meanwhile, regarding the tower crane overturn accident that occurred in Busan at the end of last year, all four units of the same model were deregistered due to issues such as false manufacturing dates. Furthermore, on the 18th, the Ministry requested the relevant local governments to file charges against the tower crane manufacturer.
