19 Kindergartens and Elementary to High Schools Nationwide Closed... 82% Enter Spring Break
24% of Kindergartens and Elementary to High Schools in Daegu Still in Session... School Closures Expected to Increase
On the 19th, when the number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) surged, 19 kindergartens and elementary, middle, and high schools nationwide were reported to have closed.
According to the Ministry of Education on the 19th, 9 kindergartens, 8 elementary schools, 1 middle school, and 1 high school were closed that day. Among them, 1 kindergarten in Daegu, along with 8 kindergartens, 8 elementary schools, 1 middle school, and 1 high school in the Seoul area.
The education authorities allow schools to close in areas where confirmed COVID-19 cases have occurred, or near the movement paths of confirmed patients, or where active monitoring subjects have appeared, raising concerns about infection.
Out of a total of 20,522 schools, 3,604 schools (17.6%) are still in session without having started vacation. 16,844 schools (82.1%) have entered spring break. 74 schools (0.3%) are either closed due to COVID-19 concerns or are in winter break.

Meanwhile, on the same day, about 24% of kindergartens and elementary, middle, and high schools in Daegu, where confirmed COVID-19 cases surged, were still in session without starting spring break. Out of a total of 803 schools, 192 schools were conducting normal classes as of 10 a.m. that day. 606 schools in Daegu had started spring break as of that date. As many confirmed cases have occurred in Daegu, the number of school closures is expected to increase further.
