Kim Gun, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Meets Richard Moore, UK Political Director General... Discusses Attendance at 'P4G Summit' and More
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] On the afternoon of the 19th, Kim Geon, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, held a meeting with Richard Moore, Director General of the UK Political and Security Affairs, who visited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and discussed the development of Korea-UK relations, environmental cooperation including the P4G Summit, and major regional situations such as the Korean Peninsula, Northeast Asia, and the Middle East.
Both sides evaluated that Korea and the UK are important cooperative partners sharing universal values and have been closely cooperating in comprehensive fields such as politics, economy, and security. They agreed to continue the momentum of cooperation through active high-level personnel exchanges between the two countries this year as well.
Deputy Minister Kim emphasized the importance of the P4G Summit to be held in Seoul this June and requested the UK's high-level attendance. In particular, Deputy Minister Kim stressed that the P4G Summit, held at a crucial time 10 years before the target year 2030 for achieving the Paris Climate Change Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), is expected to be prepared to contribute as a milestone toward decarbonization over the next decade.
In response, Director General Moore evaluated Korea's efforts to address climate change and emphasized the importance of Korea's leadership for the successful hosting of the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) to be held in the UK this November. He also responded that he would consider the UK's high-level attendance at the P4G Summit.
Furthermore, both sides shared evaluations regarding recent Korea-Japan relations and the situation on the Korean Peninsula and agreed to continue cooperation between the two countries for denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the establishment of lasting peace. They also exchanged opinions on major regional situations such as the Middle East.

An official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained, "The visit of Director General Richard Moore is evaluated as a meaningful opportunity to confirm the common positions of both sides for the development of close cooperative relations between the two countries after Brexit, the willingness to cooperate in environmental fields such as the P4G Summit, and to exchange views on the situation on the Korean Peninsula, Korea-Japan relations, and the Middle East."
