Gangseo-gu, Recruiting Scholarship Students Who Teach Younger Neighbors and Contribute to the Community
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seo Ye-jin, a third-year student at Inha University who participated in the first term of the Community Contribution Scholarship program last year, said, “Through a deep bond, I set the learning direction that the child (mentee) wanted, and as a result, the child began to take an interest in art.” She added, “Seeing the child who worked hard and won the grand prize at a national competition made me reflect on myself and learn.”
Gangseo-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Noh Hyun-song) is recruiting the second term of Community Contribution Scholarship students who will donate their educational talents to underprivileged youth in various fields such as learning, sports, art, and musical instruments until March 6.
Based on a survey showing high satisfaction among university students who participated in the Community Contribution Scholarship program and underprivileged youth last year when the program was first launched, it will be promoted again this year.
Eligibility requires applicants to be enrolled students at universities located in Seoul or the metropolitan area, who have continuously resided in Gangseo-gu for more than one year as of the recruitment announcement date, and have an average grade of B or higher in the past year. However, fourth-year students and those on leave of absence are excluded.
The number of recruits is about 20, and application forms can be downloaded from the Gangseo-gu Scholarship Foundation website or the district office website.
Required documents include the application form along with ▲self-introduction letter ▲consent form for personal information provision ▲transcript (from the past year) ▲resident registration abstract (including address history) ▲certificate of enrollment.
Applications and required documents should be submitted by visiting the Gangseo-gu Scholarship Foundation Secretariat (615 Gonghang-daero, Gangseo-gu, Seoul, 1st floor of Gangseo Lifelong Learning Center) in person or by mail.
Selected scholarship students will donate their educational talents for a total of 120 hours from April to December, and the scholarship will be paid at a rate of 10,000 KRW per hour proportional to the activity hours.
The district plans to comprehensively evaluate the activities of the Community Contribution Scholarship students early next year and award certificates of commendation and prizes to outstanding students.
Additionally, for scholarship students who have diligently contributed to the community, a letter of recommendation in the name of the Chairman of the Gangseo-gu Scholarship Foundation will be provided upon request to assist with employment activities.
A district official said, “We selected Community Contribution Scholarship students to activate educational talent donation activities for students from educationally marginalized groups,” and added, “We hope many interested university students will participate.”
