Singer Song Ga-in is making her debut as a musical actress.
According to our report on the 18th, Song Ga-in has been cast as Songhwa in the 10th anniversary musical "Seopyeonje."
Songhwa, portrayed by Song Ga-in, is an artist who abandons everything and endures numerous hardships but overcomes them to reach an artistic realm solely through sound.
Notably, Song Ga-in studied traditional pansori for 15 years before transitioning to trot. Since "Seopyeonje" is a pansori musical drama depicting the sorrows and pains experienced by singers of low social status, her accumulated stage skills are expected to shine on the musical stage.
The musical "Seopyeonje" is based on the novel of the same name by Lee Cheong-jun and adapted from the film directed by Im Kwon-taek. It tells the story of the wandering singer Yubong, his adopted daughter Songhwa, and their stepson Dongho, who grew close while living together on the streets. The film gained popularity when released in 1993.
Previously, the musical "Seopyeonje" received acclaim with singers like Lee Jaram performing on stage. Expectations are high that Song Ga-in will also fully showcase her strengths on stage.
First premiered in 2010, the musical "Seopyeonje" is preparing for its 10th anniversary performance this year, putting great effort into casting and planning a production on an unprecedented scale.
"Seopyeonje" will open on December 12 at the CJ Towol Theater in Seoul Arts Center and run until February 14, 2021, with rehearsals scheduled to begin at the end of October.
Song Ga-in debuted in 2012 with the single album "Sanbarama Gangbarama Sarangga" and gained attention by winning the grand prize (Jin) on TV Chosun's "Miss Trot" in 2019. She then released her first album "Gain" and was loved for songs like "Seoul's Moon" and "Gainieora." Currently, Song Ga-in is the top choice for various performances and broadcasts, enjoying immense popularity.
She has also challenged various genres. Last year, she appeared on the "2019 Gayo Daechukje," KBS2's "Immortal Songs," "Yoo Hee-yeol's Sketchbook," and MBC's "King of Mask Singer," receiving praise for her diverse performances.
