According to CNN on the 16th (local time), Buttigieg's remarks targeted Rush Limbaugh, a far-right radio host, who said on his show, "America is not ready to elect a gay man who kisses his husband on the debate stage as president."
Limbaugh also speculated about the 2020 election, assuming Buttigieg would be the Democratic nominee competing against President Donald Trump, saying, "What would happen when a gay man kissing his husband on stage faces the 'real man' Donald Trump?"
Buttigieg appeared on Fox News that day and said, "I will not take family values lectures from anyone who regards Limbaugh or Trump as their political or spiritual leader."
This statement was aimed at Limbaugh's close relationship with President Trump.
On January 4th, during the State of the Union address, President Trump invited Limbaugh and awarded him the 'Medal of Freedom,' the highest civilian honor.
Buttigieg also appeared on CNN, saying, "I love my husband and am always faithful to him. On stage, we usually just hug. I love him very much."
Meanwhile, Buttigieg, who came out in 2015, married Chasten Glezman, a teacher, in 2018.
