Gwangju City Promotes Eco-Friendly Ecological City Development Project
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 13th that it will invest 247 billion KRW in 207 projects including fine dust reduction, resource circulation, urban park creation, and healthy water management.
By sector, the projects include ▲22 fine dust reduction and living environment improvement projects with 44.5 billion KRW ▲13 greenhouse gas reduction projects with 3.9 billion KRW ▲29 waste reduction and resource circulation system establishment projects with 32.1 billion KRW ▲91 urban green space expansion projects with 61.5 billion KRW ▲29 healthy water environment creation projects with 48.5 billion KRW ▲16 eco-friendly sewage management projects with 55.1 billion KRW.
Among these, citizen support projects include ▲support for scrapping old diesel vehicles to reduce emissions from operating diesel vehicles (14.1 billion KRW, 6,560 vehicles) ▲support for converting children's school buses to LPG vehicles (700 million KRW, 142 vehicles) ▲electric vehicle distribution (14.8 billion KRW, 1,200 vehicles) ▲support for installing low-NOx boilers for households (500 million KRW, about 2,000 units) ▲support for pollution prevention facilities in small-scale workplaces (800 million KRW, 120 locations) ▲support for disposal of old slate roofs (1.1 billion KRW, 430 buildings) ▲support for installing food waste reducers (400 million KRW, 13 units) ▲support for installing rainwater piggy banks (100 million KRW, 50 locations).
Gwangju City plans to recruit eligible recipients for citizen support projects through the city or district websites in February and March to ensure early completion and maximize effects. For detailed information, inquiries can be made to each project department.
In the resource circulation sector, a public-private consultative body involving various social groups will be operated to establish a ‘Gwangju-type resource circulation system’ through source reduction of household waste and recycling, proposing feasible citizen practice projects.
Additionally, a full-scale citizen resource circulation practice movement will be promoted by enhancing practical efforts through education and publicity.
The private park special project (9 parks, 10 projects) plans to complete consultations with related agencies and approval and announcement of implementation plans by July, when the park facility sunset clause is enforced, aiming to preserve park area as much as possible while increasing green space.
In the healthy water environment creation sector, to improve sewage treatment efficiency and water quality by blocking unknown water, projects include the separation of rainwater and sewage in Central District 6, maintenance of the central sewage main pipeline, installation of buffer storage facilities in Hanam Industrial Complex, and non-point pollution reduction facilities in Suwan District, as well as a pilot project for a water circulation leading city in Sangmu District to restore a natural water circulation system.

Kim Seok-ung, Director of the Environmental Ecology Bureau of the city, said, “There are many pending projects that must be promoted through resident opinion collection and consultations with central government ministries, such as the designation of Jangnok Wetland as a national wetland protection area, establishment of the UNESCO Global Geopark East Asia Platform, and improvement of the No. 1 sewage treatment plant,” adding, “We will analyze and review these projects from a long-term perspective in various ways to ensure that citizens do not suffer inconvenience or damage due to environmental issues and will proceed without setbacks.”
